McCarthy Named MVC Player of the Week

Following an MVP performance last weekend at Tennessee Tech’s Golden Eagle Invitational, Valpo volleyball middle Peyton McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week this afternoon.

McCarthy stood out on the attack for the Beacons throughout the tournament’s three matches. She opened the tournament with a team-best eight kills on just 12 swings for a .667 hitting percentage in a sweep of UNC Asheville, adding a match-high four blocks as well.

Friday night saw McCarthy go for a team-high 18 kills on .607 hitting in a five-set victory over Tennessee Tech — the second-best hitting percentage in a five-set match in program history and the best in the 25-point era — while tallying four blocks as well. McCarthy closed the tournament on Saturday with 11 kills and a match-best five blocks in Valpo’s win over South Alabama.

For the three matches, McCarthy averaged a team-best 2.85 kills/set on .471 hitting and an even block per set. The All-Tournament Team accolade was the fifth of her career, while it was the second time she has earned tournament MVP honors. It is McCarthy’s second career weekly award from the MVC, and in fact her second in the last three weeks of regular season play, as she was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week for the final week of the spring 2021 regular season.
