Keith Schunzel enters his second season as the assistant coach in 2007. He serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator and travel coordinator as well as assisting in the planning and running of practice.
In his first season with the Crusader program, Schunzel helped guide Valpo to 23 victories in 2006, extending the program’s streak of consecutive 20-win seasons to five.
Schunzel came to Valparaiso from Purdue University where he served as a volunteer assistant for the Boilermaker volleyball team. In his role at Purdue, Schunzel assisted with practice, scouting and video breakdown, while also helping with the day-to-day operations of the team.
In 2005, his lone season at Purdue, the Boilermakers compiled an impressive 25-9 record, spending 13 weeks in the AVCA Top 25 and finishing the year ranked 17th.
The Boilermakers knocked off three Top 25 opponents during the season, including a pair of Top 10 teams. In the postseason, Purdue advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA Tournament, falling to #3 Washington State to close out their season.
As a collegian, Schunzel was a four-year starter at setter for Ball State from 2001-2004. While with the Cardinals, Schunzel helped the team to a 2002 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Regular Season and Tournament Championship, and eventually a spot in the NCAA Tournament Final Four.
In 2004, Schunzel was named to the AVCA All-America Second Team and also placed on his third consecutive All-MIVA team. The setter finished his career at Ball State ranked third all-time in assists with 5,558.
A 2004 graduate of Ball State, Schunzel played professionally for one season, competing in Germany for VfB Friedrichshafen.
Schunzel currently resides in Valparaiso.
