Crusaders Rally From Eight Down to Defeat Butler in OT
Saturday, December 4, 2004
Jenna Stangler's (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville H.S.) 12-footer at the buzzer of regulation forced overtime and Valparaiso dominated the extra session as the Crusaders defeated Butler 61-51 on Saturday afternoon at the State Farm Hoosier State Classic in Terre Haute, Ind.

Valpo trailed by eight, 44-36, with 4:53 to play, before mounting the late run. Jamie Gutowski (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean H.S.) drained a three and Betsy Rietema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Christian H.S.) hit a jumper to cut the lead to three with 2:06 left. After the lead went back to six, Gutowski made a free throw and Stangler hit a pair to close within three with 45.9 seconds left. Gutowski then got a steal and Meredith Baugher (Berea, Ohio/Berea H.S.) scored on a lay-in and was fouled to tie the game with 23.9 left.

Courtney Urquhart answered for Butler to put the Bulldogs back in front with 6.7 seconds left before the Crusaders pushed the ball up to the front court and Stangler tied it as the horn sounded.

In overtime it was all Valpo. Lauren Bechtold (Hebron, Ind./Hebron H.S.) scored the first basket and after Gutowski made a steal and a lay-in Valpo was up five with 3:21 remaining. A Bulldog free throw cut the lead to four, but Gutowski drained her third three of the game to push the lead to seven. Butler made just two free throws in the extra session, and Valpo scored its final five points from the line for the win.

Valpo jumped in front early 8-1 as the Crusaders held Butler without a field goal for the game's first seven minutes. Butler used a 10-2 run to take a 15-12 lead with 8:29 left in the first half, and extended the lead to five, 25-20 at intermission.

Butler built its biggest lead of the day, 40-31, with 10:39 left in the first half before Valpo began its comeback.

Stangler finished with a team-high 15 points and eight boards, while Gutowski added 14 and Rietema scored 12 more. Tamra Braun also grabbed eight boards for Valpo.

Cortney Urquhart led Butler (4-2) with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
