Frederick Named to MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team

Excellence on the basketball court and excellence in the classroom lead to Valpo women’s basketball senior point guard Shay Frederick (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) earning a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team for a second consecutive season, as announced by the conference office Tuesday morning.

Frederick averaged a team-high 12.1 points/game during the regular season. She is on pace to lead the Valley in assists for the second straight season, while her 141 total assists this year already rank seventh in a single season in program history. Frederick also ranks second in the MVC in free throw percentage, fourth in assist/turnover ratio and eighth in 3-pointers/game.

For her career, Frederick ranks second all-time at Valpo with 490 career assists and also cracked the program’s career top-10 chart in scoring earlier this year — her current total of 1,256 points is good for eighth in program history. She also ranks fourth all-time in free throws made and fifth in 3-pointers made.

In the classroom, Frederick currently boasts a 3.90 cumulative grade point average as a marketing major. She earned a spot on the Scholar-Athlete First Team for the second straight season. Frederick is a two-time recipient of the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award, has been named to the MVC Honor Roll and has earned Valpo Presidential Academic Honors.
