Steve Bruce is in his seventh season as a member of the women’s basketball coaching staff at Valparaiso University and enters his third year as an associate head coach.
Bruce arrived at Valpo as an assistant coach prior to the 1999-2000 season. In the summer of 2003, he was promoted to the school’s associate head coaching position. While with the Brown and Gold, the Crusaders have compiled a 107-76 (.585) record. He was a part of Valpo’s Mid-Continent Conference regular season title in 2001-2002, two Mid-Continent Conference Tournament championships, two NCAA Tournament appearances, and a quarterfinal run in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
With the Crusaders, Bruce instructs the defense and post players, is in charge of scouting, directs the summer camps, and assists with recruiting.
A 1981 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education, Bruce captained the football team his senior year. In 1984 he received his master's degree from Morehead State University. Before concentrating full-time on basketball, he was the wide receivers coach at both Ohio Wesleyan and Morehead State, having coached two All-Americans.
Bruce had extensive coaching experience from the Bowling Green, Ky. school system and in summer basketball camp work. At Bowling Green, his middle school boys teams were twice Southern Kentucky Middle School champions. His 1998-1999 team went undefeated and he posted a career record of 56-9 (.862).
Three times nominated as Outstanding Young Educator in Warren County, Ky., Bruce received Teacher of the Year and Excellence in Teaching awards, as well as the National League of Junior Cotillions award for best mannered teacher.
Bruce has served as camp director for the Midwest Invitational
Basketball Showcase camps. He also has broad experience at Lipscomb
University and the former High 5 College Exposure Camps.
