Caroline McCombs is in her sixth season on the Valparaiso University women’s basketball staff. Prior to the 2004-2005 season, McCombs was promoted to an associate head coach.
At Valpo, she is also in her fourth season as the Crusaders recruiting coordinator. During her tenure she has led recruiting efforts at both the national and international levels. She has also been instrumental in Valpo’s perimeter play development. In addition, she assists with on the floor coaching, game day preparation, and scouting.
During the summer of 2004, McCombs served as the head coach of an Athletes In Action team that toured Poland . The team was composed of NCAA Division I players along with international players. The three-week tour concluded with competition against the Polish Junior National Team.
McCombs joined the Crusader staff after spending the 1998-1999 season playing with Karlovy Vary of the Czech Basketball Federation in the Czech Republic.
A graduate of Youngstown State University, McCombs finished her career as the sixth leading scorer in Penguin history with 1,577 career points. She also finished tied for second in the record books with 146 career three-pointers, fourth with 493 career assists and sixth with 236 career steals.
McCombs helped lead Youngstown State to four consecutive Mid-Continent Conference regular season championships, two Mid-Con Tournament titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances, and the Penguins' first NCAA Tournament win against Memphis.
She was also a two-time All Mid-Continent Conference selection, a three-time All-Tournament Team pick, and started 112 of 115 games during her career as a Penguin.
In June 2001, she was inducted into the Medina County Sports Hall of Fame in Ohio.
McCombs completed her M.A.L.S. degree in sports administration in 2001 from Valparaiso University. She received her bachelor’s degree in dietetics from Youngstown State in 1998.
