Shon Washington enters his eighth season of his second stint as head coach of the Valparaiso University bowling program in 2023-24. Washington previously led Valpo as head coach during the 2010–11 season after serving as an assistant coach during the program’s inaugural season.

Consistently facing one of the nation's toughest schedules and competing in the nation's toughest league, Washington owns a 338-415 overall record in his eight seasons as head coach. Washington's second stint as head coach has been highlighted by a 43-43 record in the 2017-18 season - the program's first season at or above .500 since 2011-12 - while the 2020-21 squad was ranked as high as #19 nationally - the program's highest ranking in his second stint. In February 2022, Washington guided the Beacons against Nebraska in the first national telecast of collegiate bowling in Big Ten Network history.

Washington helped launch the Valpo program from its inception, serving as an assistant coach for the inaugural season as it went 68-46 and finished the season ranked #10 nationally. He then was promoted to head coach for the 2010–11 season and guided Valpo to a 52-48 record and a #14 ranking to end the year. In his one season as head coach in his initial stint with the program, he coached Natalie Cortese ’12, who was named an Honorable Mention All-American.

Over his eight seasons as head coach, Washington has coached seven Tournament MVPs and 16 All-Tournament Team honorees. His teams have also been successful in the classroom, as under his watch, 29 bowlers have earned All-Academic recognition from the NTCA and Valpo has earned the NTCA's Team Academic Award five times.

Washington remained active in coaching between stints at Valpo. He spent the 2011–12 and 2012–13 seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at Lake Central H.S. Washington was head coach for the Shepard (Ill.) H.S. bowling team during the 2015–16 season.

Prior to his first stint at Valpo, Washington spent four years as the head women’s bowling coach at Calumet College of St. Joseph. Leading the program from its inception, he led the Crimson Wave to the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships in just its second season and ended the 2007–08 season ranked No. 14 nationally. Washington led Cal College to a second straight appearance in the Team Championships in 2008-09 as well.

Washington also previously worked eight years as the head girls bowling coach at Lake Central. A two-time Post-Tribune Coach of the Year with the Lady Indians, Washington guided Lake Central to three state titles, winning in 2003, 2007 and 2009. Under his watch, the Lady Indians also captured two semi-state, three regional, four sectional and six conference titles.

An excellent teacher of the game, Washington currently holds his USBC Silver Coaching Certification.
