Crusader Women’s Golf Opens Spring Season Sunday

The Valparaiso women’s golf team kicked off its 2014 spring slate on Sunday with the first day of competition at the Le Triomphe Collegiate Invitational, hosted by McNeese State at Le Triomphe G.C. in Broussard, La.

The Crusaders posted a team score of 337 on Sunday, placing 17th out of the 18 competing schools.  UL-Monroe tops the team standings through day one with a first-round score of 298.

Senior Erika Pfaender (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) posted Valpo’s top individual round on Sunday, shooting an 80, good for a tie for 46th place.  Fellow senior Michelle Kleckner (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) posted a round of 84 to end the day in a tie for 73rd place.

Senior Kelly Voigt (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) carded an 85 on Sunday to end the first day of action tied for 78th position.  Freshman Sydney Shrum (Cloverdale, Ind./Cloverdale) ended day one tied for 84th place after shooting an 88 in the first round, while sophomore Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) was two shots farther back in a tie for 90th place after an opening-round 90.

Valparaiso will continue the three-day tournament on Monday.
