Three seniors on the Valparaiso women's golf team posted top-15 finishes as the Crusaders finished in sixth place at the Benbow Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla. on Tuesday.
The Crusaders shot a team round of 327 on Tuesday, 18 strokes improved from Monday's round, to close out the tournament in sixth place in the 11-team field with a score of 672, just five shots out of fifth position. Newberry College took the team title with a score of 649.
Senior Michelle Kleckner (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) led the way for Valpo, shooting rounds of 83 and 81 for a score of 164, good for a tie for 11th place in the 64-golfer field. Fellow senior Erika Pfaender (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) posted the Crusaders' best 18-hole score of the tournament, shooting a round of 76 on Tuesday to finish in 14th place with a 36-hole score of 165, while senior Kelly Voigt (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) was one shot further back at 166 (84-82), tied for 15th place.
Sophomore Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) improved by four strokes on Tuesday, shooting rounds of 92 and 188 to finish in a tie for 45th place at 180, while freshman Sydney Shrum (Cloverdale, Ind./Cloverdale) finished one stroke back of Gill, placing 47th with a score of 181. Competing as an individual, freshman Angie Kim (Schaumburg, Ill./Fremd) recorded rounds of 86 and 88 to finish at 174, good for 33rd place.
Valparaiso returns to action in just under a month, when it makes the short trip to Fort Wayne to compete in the IPFW Spring Invitational.
