Women’s Golf Continues Play at Horizon League Championship
Kylie Shoemake shot a round of 78 to move into a tie for 14th Saturday.

The Valparaiso University women’s golf team continued action Saturday from the Horizon League Championship at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., finishing the tournament’s second round in a tie for sixth place.

The Crusaders posted a team score of 332 on Saturday, giving them a two-round effort of 657, tied with Detroit for sixth position. UIC is just four strokes ahead of Valpo in fifth place after two days of competition.

Leading the way for the Crusaders Saturday was freshman Kylie Shoemake (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central). Shoemake posted a pair of birdies in Saturday’s second round, including on the opening hole, and shot a 78 for the day. The rookie’s two-round total of 162 puts her in a tie for 14th place entering Sunday, just four strokes out of 10th place.

Senior Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) and sophomore Katie Willenbrink (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) ended Saturday tied for 21st place with 36-hole totals of 165. Gill shot an 81 on Saturday to end the day at 165, while Willenbrink posted a second-round 86. Junior Angie Kim (Schaumburg, Ill./Fremd) is tied for 30th place at 169 through two rounds, while sophomore Kiana Jongsma (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) is two shots back of Kim with a 171 total through 36 holes, good for a tie for 34th position.

Valparaiso closes out the 2016 Horizon League Championship on Sunday morning. Jongsma will be first off the tee for Valpo at 6:30 a.m. CT, with live scoring available via ValpoAthletics.com.
