Valpo Ties Indiana 1-1 in Preseason Scrimmage

The Valparaiso University women's soccer team opened its 2002 preseason schedule with a 1-1 draw against Indiana on Wednesday evening in Bloomington, Ind.

The Crusaders and Hoosiers played a scoreless opening half, with Indiana holding an 8-3 advantage on shots. Valpo goalkeeper Kristen Templin (Madison, Wis./Middleton H.S.) made five saves to keep the match scoreless.

IU broke through first, with a goal just 30 seconds into the second half as Shelly Gruszka scored on a free kick, beating Crusaders freshman Danielle Guerra (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.).

The Brown and Gold responded in the 84th minute, as rookie Lorna Torrez (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes H.S.) found the back of the net on a cross from Lori Moore (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) to beat Hoosier keeper Colleen Kalafut.

Guerra made two second half saves for Valpo, making her first appearance as a Crusader.

Indiana outshot the Crusaders 17-5 for the match, holding an 8-3 advantage on shots on goal. The Hoosiers committed 15 fouls to Valpo's 13, and held a 2-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Valpo will conclude its preseason schedule on Sunday afternoon, when the Brown and Gold host DePauw at Eastgate Field. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
