Box Score

Colorado College scored less than 15 minutes into the match and the one goal proved to be the difference on Friday evening, as the Tigers defeated Valparaiso 1-0 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Molly Uyenishi collected clearing attempt by Valpo following a Tiffany Brown corner kick and pushed a loose ball past a screened Mele Cabral (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) at the 14:55 mark.

The Tigers controlled the play for most of the first half, outshooting the Brown and Gold 15-3, including a 7-0 advantage on goal.  Colorado College also had four corner kick opportunities in the stanza, but Cabral made six saves to keep the match close.

“In the first half we didn’t do a good job winning the ball in the air and possessing it,” head coach John Marovich said afterwards.  “The second half we did a much better job of keeping possession.”

Valpo outplayed the Tigers in the second half, holding a 7-3 edge in shots, but was unable to find the equalizer.  Kendall Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel Catholic H.S.) and Erin Suckling (Newmarket, Ont./Newmarket H.S.) both hit the crossbar on shots in the same sequence with just over 10 minutes to play in the match and the Crusaders forced Tiger goalkeeper Geneva Sills to make five second half stops.

Colorado College (2-0) finished the match with an 18-10 advantage in shots but Cabral made seven saves to keep the margin at one.

“I thought we played well in the second half, especially since we had five of our seven shots on goal,” said Marovich.  “We just couldn’t get one past their keeper.”

Valparaiso (1-1) will wrap up their road trip on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. CDT match against Air Force at the United States Air Force Academy.  The match can be heard live on www.sportsjuice.com.

Match Notes:The match was delayed by lightning for 25 minutes at halftime … Colorado College’s goal snapped Cabral’s streak of not allowing a goal at 396:42 dating back to October 8, 2006 ... Becky Clever (Cincinnati, Ohio/Madeira H.S.) and Candice Partee’ (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest H.S.) made their collegiate debuts for the Crusaders … this was the first meeting ever between Valpo and Colorado College.
