For the second time this weekend Valparaiso's women's soccer team played to a double-overtime tie, as the Crusaders and Western Illinois played for 110 minutes before settling for a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Eastgate Field.
Emily King (Colona, Ill./United Township H.S.) put Valpo on the scoreboard first just 7:53 into the match, scoring on a blast from the top of the penalty area after dribbling around the top of the box with the ball.
The Westerwinds Sarah Garhje tied the match from 25 yards out at the 58:13 mark in the second half, capitalizing on a Crusader turnover for the match's final goal.
Valpo controlled the play for a majority of the match, holding a 21-5 edge on shots, including a 9-3 advantage on goal. Valpo held an 8-0 shot advantage in the extra sessions.
Danielle Guerra (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) made two stops for the Brown and Gold, while Sarah Yakapovich made one first half save for Western Illinois (2-13-1, 2-3-1 Mid-Con). Carey Cowhey came on in relief in the second half and made seven stops in the second stanza and the overtimes.
Valpo had ten corner kick opportunities in the match, while not yielding a chance to the Westerwinds.
Valparaiso (3-9-2, 1-1-2) will return to action next Saturday evening when the Brown and Gold travels to Tulsa, Okla. for an 8 p.m. match at Oral Roberts.
