Crusaders Send Seniors Off on High Note
Sunday, October 23, 2005A pair of seniors scored for Valparaiso on Senior Day as the Crusaders closed the home portion of the 2005 schedule on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over IPFW at Eastgate Field.
With the victory, Valpo ties the school record for wins in a season with ten, matching the 2001 and 2004 squads. The Crusaders also closed Eastgate Field for the season with a 7-1 mark, the best in school history.
In the final home match for the senior class, it was only appropriate that the seniors accounted for the Valpo scoring. Three classmates teamed up for the first goal of the match at the 18:19 mark when Kristi Dixon (Ortonville, Mich./Notre Dame Prep H.S.) and Allison Swanson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.) worked the ball in the box and found Ashley Shaneyfelt (Roswell, Ga./Roswell H.S.) five yards out for her first goal of the season. The tally was also Shaneyfelt's first goal since her freshman year.
Senior Emily King (Colona, Ill./United Township H.S.) added what would be the insurance goal at the 65:52 mark in the second half with her seventh goal of the year and 17th of her career. Freshman Kendall Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel H.S.) chipped a pass up over the IPFW defense into the box where King collected it and beat goalkeeper Shannon Lynn to make it 2-0.
The Mastodons found the back of the net just 1:04 later as Anika Apar converted a Valpo turnover, scoring from 15 yards out after going one-on-one with Crusader keeper Danielle Guerra (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.).
Guerra, a senior, would keep IPFW off the scoreboard the rest of the way, making three stops in goal for the victory in her final match at Eastgate Field.
Lynn made three saves in goal for IPFW (3-10-3) as the Mastodons were outshot by Valpo 15-9 in the contest. The Crusaders, as they have done much of the season, had a decisive advantage in corner kicks won as well, taking seven to IPFW's one.
Valpo's Lorna Torrez (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes H.S.) and Amanda Meyer (Somerset, Wis./Somerset H.S.) also played their final home matches on Sunday.
Valparaiso (10-6-1, 4-1 Mid-Con) will close out the regular season on Saturday in Cedar City, Utah as the Crusaders battle Southern Utah. Valpo, which is already assured of at least a share of the Mid-Continent Conference title, can win it outright with a win or a tie against the Thunderbirds. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CDT.
