Friday, September 29, 2006
Valparaiso won its school record seventh straight match on Friday afternoon, while also setting a school mark for road wins in a season, as the Crusaders defeated Youngstown State 3-0 in Youngstown, Ohio.

The win bettered the 2000 squad's mark of six straight victories as well as the 2001 team's five road wins.

Freshman Sarah Jewell (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill H.S.) started the scoring with just 1:58 to play before halftime, scoring far post from the left corner of the goal box. The goal was Jewell's fifth of the year, tying Lori Johnson (Sachse, Texas/Naaman Forest H.S.) for the team lead. Jackie Kondratko (Granger, Ind./Penn H.S.) drew the assist, her first of two on the afternoon.

Laura Murphy (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley H.S.) found the goal in the 73rd minute scoring from outside the box after a feed from Ani Michl (Deerfield, Ill./Stevenson H.S.).

Reva Van Aartsen (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East H.S.) capped the scoring with 8:13 to play, heading home her first career goal on a pass from Kondratko. The sophomore was the eighth Crusader on the year to tally her first career goal.

Valpo outshot the Penguins 26-1 for the match, including a 14-0 edge on goal. Neither Erin Murray (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley H.S.) nor Mele Cabral (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) made a stop, as each played 45 minutes between the posts. Youngstown State (2-7), a future Horizon League foe for the Brown and Gold got 11 saves from keeper Cailin Bodzioney.

Valparaiso (9-2) will look to continue winning ways on Sunday afternoon as the Crusaders battle Oakland in Mid-Continent Conference action. Kickoff against the Golden Grizzlies is set for 12 p.m. CDT in Rochester, Mich.
