Griffith Earns Pair of Honors Following Record-Setting Performance

Valparaiso University women’s soccer senior Cory Griffith (Lemont, Ill./Providence Catholic) raked in a pair of honors on Tuesday following her record-setting Senior Day on Sunday afternoon, as she was named Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week.

Griffith scored a record-setting four goals and tallied a record-breaking eight points in Valpo’s win over Robert Morris (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon, accounting for all of Valpo’s goals in the team’s 4-2 victory. The senior completed a perfect hat trick in the first half, scoring with her right foot in the 20th minute, a header in the 34th minute, and her left foot in the 39th minute. Griffith broke the previous program record of three goals in a match – last accomplished herself last season – with her fourth goal of the match, finishing in the 48th minute.

With the four-goal performance, Griffith is the first player in NCAA Division I women’s soccer this year to surpass a hat trick in a single match, and also becomes the first player in the history of the Valpo women’s soccer program to score at least three goals in a match twice in her career. On Valpo’s career charts, Griffith now stands alone in match-winning goals with 11 game-winners, ranks second alone with 26 goals, and sits in third place with 58 career points.

Griffith’s weekly honor from the MVC office was her first since Valpo joined The Valley. She last was named a league Player of the Week on Oct. 31, 2016 in the Horizon League. Meanwhile, her appearance on Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week is Valpo’s first representation on the 11-player weekly squad since the website’s inception.
