Five Soccer Players Earn MVC Scholar-Athlete Recognition

Five Valpo soccer players earned honors based on both athletic and academic excellence on Tuesday afternoon from the Missouri Valley Conference. The Beacons placed a conference-best four players on the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team — Allie Anderson, Nikki Coryell¸ Abbey Hillman and Nicole Norfolk — while Addy Joiner was named an MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention selection.

Anderson was a Second Team All-MVC selection for Valpo this season in the midfield, tying for team-high honors with five assists on the season. She carries a perfect 4.00 GPA as an exercise science major.

Coryell won MVC Goalkeeper of the Year honors for a third consecutive season this year, pacing the conference within MVC-only play in goals against average and save percentage. The junior owns a 3.959 GPA as an accounting and sports management double major.

Hillman was a regular right back for the Beacons’ strong defensive line, earning MVC Defensive Player of the Week honors once during the season. She has a perfect 4.00 GPA as an accounting major.

Norfolk was a First Team All-MVC choice for her work at center back, anchoring a Beacons’ defensive line which surrendered just one goal while she was on the field in conference play. The senior is a biology and chemistry double major with a 3.962 GPA.

Joiner earned First Team All-MVC recognition as one of the top finishers in the conference, ending the year second among MVC players with seven goals. The sophomore currently carries a 3.666 GPA as an international business major.
