A busy weekend of home athletic events on the Valparaiso University campus opened on a winning note Thursday evening, as the Valpo soccer team earned a 1-0 win on Brown Field over Eastern Michigan thanks to a first-half penalty kick from senior Addy Joiner (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton).

Shafer Notches Brace as Soccer Earns Win Late at Wright State
There’s been some magic in the 88th minute so far this season for the Valpo soccer program, as for the second time this year, the Beacons found the match-winning goal less than three minutes from time. On Sunday, it was freshman Kaleigh Shafer (Shelby Township, Mich./Eisenhower) striking for the second time on the afternoon to deliver the Beacons a 2-1 victory at Wright State in Dayton, Ohio.

Soccer Rallies Late, Earns 2-1 Win Over Milwaukee
It would be tough to script a more thrilling way to open the 2024 home campaign for Valpo soccer than what took place on Brown Field Sunday, as trailing 1-0 through 70 minutes, the Beacons found the back of the net twice late to reverse the result and pull out a 2-1 victory over visiting Milwaukee.

A strike from outside the penalty box in the 67th minute proved to be the decisive tally Thursday afternoon in Charleston, Ill., as host Eastern Illinois defeated the Valpo soccer team, 1-0.

Joiner Named Preseason First Team All-MVC; Valpo Picked Fifth
Valpo senior forward Addy Joiner (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) has been named a preseason First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as the conference office released its preseason poll and teams on Wednesday. The Beacons were picked to finish in fifth place in the Valley standings in the polling of the conference’s head coaches.

Wade Tabbed United Soccer Coaches High School Scholar Player of the Year
Valpo soccer freshman Hailey Wade (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) earned a prestigious accolade this week to round out her prep trophy case, as United Soccer Coaches named her its 2023-24 High School Scholar Player of the Year. Wade was also tabbed a High School Scholar All-American for her work on the field and in the classroom.
