Stephen Anthony

Stephen Anthony was named the second head coach of the Valparaiso University women’s soccer program prior to the 1998 season. Through his first nine years at Valpo, Anthony is the winningest coach in school history, both in terms of victories and winning percentage.

The 2006 Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year, Anthony guided Valparaiso to the 2006 Mid-Con regular season title, the team’s second consecutive conference crown and first outright title in school history. The Crusaders tied a school record with 12 victories and the team’s .711 winning percentage was the best ever as well. Anthony guided the Brown and Gold to its first Mid-Continent Conference regular season and tournament titles in 2005, along with a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history as Valpo headed to Notre Dame to face the fifth-ranked team in the nation. The team set a new school mark for victories in a season in 2005, winning 12 contests while also posting the school’s second best winning percentage (.595). Anthony was named Mid-Continent Conference co-Coach of the Year for his efforts, the second time in his career he earned such an honor.

During his stay at Valparaiso, Anthony has led the Crusaders to six Mid-Continent Conference Tournament berths, including appearances in the finals in both 1999 and 2004 in addition to the 2005 championship. In 2001, Anthony led the Brown and Gold to 10 victories and was named Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year for the first time after guiding the Crusaders to a second place finish in the league. In 1999, Anthony led Valparaiso to the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament championship match in the Crusaders’ first season as a member of the Mid-Con.

While guiding the Brown and Gold Anthony has had 12 players named to the Mid-Continent Conference First Team and 19 Second Team All Mid-Con selections. He also sported the Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year in both 1999 and 2006. During his first season, Anthony had two All-Missouri Valley Conference picks on his squad, including a Second Team member and an Honorable Mention selection.

Anthony’s players have also succeeded in the classroom, as 102 Crusader student-athletes have earned Academic All-Conference honors under his guidance. For the past eight seasons, Anthony has also served as a state coach for Indiana's Olympic Development Program, as well as a staff coach for Region II.

Prior to being named head coach at Valpo, Anthony was the head men's soccer coach at Northeastern Illinois University for one season, the final year of varsity competition at the school. He also served as the head women's club soccer coach at DePaul University from 1990-1996.

Anthony played collegiate soccer at DePaul from 1984-1988, becoming the school's first four-year player. He was captain of the squad both as a junior and senior. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in commerce from DePaul in 1988 and earned his Master of Science in management of public services from the school in 1990. Anthony finished a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree in sports management at Valparaiso University in 2003.

Anthony has earned his United States Soccer Federation "B" License as well as his National Soccer Coaches Association of America Advanced National Diploma. He and his wife, Jamie, have been married since 1989, and have one son, Tucker, born in 1998.
