Valpo Women Continue at Midwest Classic

With action continuing at the Midwest Classic Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., the Valparaiso women's swim team remained in fifth place following day two of competition on Friday evening.

Eastern Illinois leads the meet with 519.5 points, followed by Miami (Ohio) with 427 points and Western Illinois (412). IUPUI is fourth with 312.5 points, while the Crusaders have tallied 283 points heading into the final day of competition.

The Crusaders began the day with a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay as the team of Lauren Bambach (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman H.S.), Ashley Seale (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville H.S.), Katie Urbas (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette H.S.), and Leah Schneider (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) touched finished in a time of 1:54.95.

Valpo placed two individuals in the finals of the 400 individual medley, with Amanda Banholzer (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline H.S.) finishing in seventh place with a time of 4:52.88, the fourth fastest in school history. Schneider was eight 2.84 seconds behind Banholzer, while Julie Fisher (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) finished tenth with a mark of 5:02.54.

In the 100 butterfly, Urbas placed fifth for the Brown and Gold, touching the wall in 1:00.77. Seale finished in ninth place with a time of 1:01.23, while Lauren Nettenstrom (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) also scored with her 15th place mark (1:06.26).

The 200 free saw Britt Nelson (Cortland, N.Y./Homer H.S.) place tenth with a time of 1:59.10, while Jennifer Penninga (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley H.S.) was three spots back with a time of 2:00.41. Daniella Trombatore (Redding, Calif./Shasta H.S.) earned a 15th place finish with a time of 2:01.11.

The 100 breaststroke saw three more Crusaders score for the team, as Laura Sadowski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East H.S>) led the way with a 12th place finish (1:19.28). Shannon McDonald (Crown Point, Ind./Marian Catholic H.S.) and Veronika Pentecost (Hagerstown, Ind./Hagerstown H.S.) were 13th and 14th respectively.

The final individual event of the day saw Bambach lead the way with a seventh place finish in the 100 backstroke. The freshman touched the wall in 1:03.55. Cassidy Kuhlmann (Mount Prospect, Ill./Hersey H.S.) finished 13th with a time of 1:05.63, while Jessica Waters (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic H.S.) was 14th (1:05.88).

Valpo's 800 free relay concluded the day's competition with a third place finish. Penninga, Nelson, Urbas, and Trombatore finished with a time of 8:04.84.

The Crusaders will conclude their season on Saturday with the final day of competition. Preliminary heats begin at 9 a.m. CST, while finals are slated for 5 p.m. CST.
