Segatto Sets Third Record of the Weekend for Crusader Women

Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan H.S.) added to her school record total on Friday evening as Valparaiso remains in seventh place through two days of the Calvin Winter Invitational held at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Crusaders have tallied 94 points through 11 events, 65 points in front of eighth place Saint Mary’s (Ind.).  The Crusaders trail sixth place Kalamazoo by 71 points.  Grand Valley State leads the way with 546 points.

Segatto, who set two school records on Thursday, shattered the school mark in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.64 to finish in fourth place.  She bettered Elizabeth Thompson’s 2007 mark of 2:09.03, a time she matched in the morning preliminaries.  Segatto also turned in the third best 400 individual medley time in school history in the morning preliminaries, swimming the event as an exhibition.  She touched the wall in 4:42.14.

Natalie Jarrett (Lebanon, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) added a 10th place finish for the Brown and Gold in the 100 breaststroke.  The senior touched the wall in 1:07.68, the third best mark in school history. 

Justine Barnes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams H.S.) finished 13th in the 200 fly with a finals time of 2:21.00 while Lauren Knop (Geneva, Ill./Geneva H.S.) posted a 14th place effort in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.41, the 10th best mark in school history.  Knop also led Valpo in the 50 free with a time of 25.83 seconds.

Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West H.S.) paced Valpo in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.

The 200 freestyle relay saw Knop, Jarrett, Bretl, and Brittany Bencur (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) post a time of 1:43.00 to finish in 11th place.  Valpo also finished in 11th place in the 400 medley relay with Knop, Jarrett, Segatto, and Ali Taubert (Bloomington, Ill./University H.S.) turning in a time of 4:08.14.

Valparaiso will return to the water on Saturday morning for the final day of competition at the meet.  Preliminary heats begin at 9 a.m. CST with the finals slated for 5 p.m. CST.
