Valparaiso posted five event victories on Saturday afternoon in its home finale, and split a double dual meet at the Athletics-Recreation Center. The Crusaders downed Monmouth (Ill.) 63-40 while dropping a 56-39 decision to Butler.
Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan H.S.) and Natalie Jarrett (Lebanon, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) were both double winners for the Brown and Gold while Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West H.S) also earned an event win.
Segatto turned in a time of 1:02.06 in the 100 butterfly to post a narrow 0.44 second victory for her first win of the day. The freshman then added an 11-second triumph in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:22.54. Segatto also added a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.75.
Jarrett, the lone senior on the team was honored before the meet, and triumphed in the 400 individual medley by more than seven seconds with a time of 4:53.81. She also added a 0.79 second win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.66.
Bretl posted Valpo’s first victory of the afternoon, doing so in the 1000 free by more than four seconds with a time of 11:19.10.
Lauren Knop (Geneva, Ill./Geneva H.S.) finished second in the 50 free with a time of 26.41 seconds, just 0.26 seconds off of the pace. She also finished second in the 100 free, less than a second out of the top spot with a time of 57.49 seconds.
Ali Taubert (Bloomington, Ill./University H.S.) added a second place finish, finishing behind Segatto in the 500 free with a time of 5:33.28.
Valparaiso (2-10) will wrap up the dual meet portion of the schedule next Saturday, Feb. 4 with a quadrangular meet against Monmouth (Ill.), Western Illinois, and Augustana (Ill.). The meet begins at 1 p.m. Please note, this is a change in date as the meet was originally slated for Sunday.
