Day Three Complete at Horizon League Championships

Valparaiso continued action on Friday at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis. and currently sits in seventh place heading into the final day of action.

The Crusaders have scored 104 points through 13 events, and hold a seven point advantage over Butler. Milwaukee continues to lead the way with 509.5 points, a five point edge over Cleveland State.  Green Bay is third (429 points) followed by UIC (361.5), Wright State (259.5), Youngstown State (229), and the Crusaders.

Valpo’s only appearance in the finals on Friday was in the 800 freestyle relay where the team of Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan H.S.), Ali Taubert (Bloomington, Ill./University H.S.), Natalie Jarrett (Lebanon, Ind./Western Boone H.S.), and Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West H.S.) turned in the fourth fastest effort in school history.  The team finished with a time of 7:59.40.

The morning preliminary heats saw the Brown and Gold post numerous season and collegiate best times. 

Jarrett turned in the third best 100 breaststroke time ever at Valpo with her mark with a time of 1:07.02.  She missed qualifying for the evening finals by 0.01 seconds.  Makenna Cannon (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine H.S.) added the fourth best mark ever in the event with her time of 1:08.41.  Katrina Peters (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central H.S.) turned in her season’s best 100 breast time of 1:13.19 as well.

Lauren Knop (Geneva, Ill./Geneva H.S.) posted her best time as a Crusader in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.87.  She also led the Crusaders in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.90 while Stephanie Steiner (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton H.S.) added her collegiate best mark of 1:06.02.

Taubert added a career best in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:01.95 while Nicole Michalowski (Diamond, Ill./Coal City H.S.) added her best mark in the event at 2:09.98.  Katie Meunier (Mukwanago, Wis./Mukwanago  H.S.) and Laura Fowler (Olney, Md./Good Counsel H.S.) both added personal bests as well with times of 2:11.02 and 2:12.43 respectively.

Valparaiso will wrap up the 2011-2012 season on Saturday with the final day of competition.  Preliminary heats begin at 10:30 a.m. with finals commencing at 6:30 p.m.
