Flames Get Past Crusaders
Flavia Segatto earned a convincing first-place finish in the 200 yard butterfly Saturday versus UIC.

Less than 24 hours after Valpo met the Phoenix in Green Bay, the Crusaders dropped a dual meet to UIC in Chicago. The men's team suffered a 160-69 defeat while the women's team came up short by a 145-81 score. 

Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan) claimed an individual win in the 200 yard butterfly with a 2:16.04 result. The junior bested UIC's Devon O'Neil by more than five seconds in the finals. 

Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) also secured a victory Saturday. Trimpe won the 200 yard breaststroke (2:41.56) after turning in a strong second-place finish in the 100 yard freestyle (58.94). The freshman edged out fellow freshman teammate Allie Berry (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) by fewer than two-tenths of a second (59.12). 

Sophomore Ciara Lightner (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) was less than a second after UIC's Katherine Hare in the 200 yard backstroke. Lightner was awarded three points for her third-place finish.

Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) turned in a similar third-place time in the 500 yard freestyle. Bretl earned three points for her 5:29.40 time. 

The Flames swept the diving competitions.

On the men's side, Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) gave the Brown and Gold a pair of formidable second place turnouts. The sophomore received four points for his 4:16.68 performance in the 400 yard IM before doing the same in the 200 yard butterfly. Castro Diaz hit the wall at 1:58.68, just ahead of UIC's Ramiro Almaraz (1:58.77). 

Brian Wasicak (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) garnered three points for clocking a third-place 17:29.58 time in the 1650 yard freestyle.

Frederick Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and Alec Domjan (Jackson, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) combined to get three points in the 200 yard freestyle.

Jenny later recorded a three-point, third-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle thanks to a 5:02.60 time. 

Tate Wegehaupt (Tigard, Ore./Tigard) registered an individual victory in the 200 yard breaststroke. The senior clinched nine team points for his 2:08.97 time. Atolo Tuinukuafe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) turned in a 2:24.02 result, which gave him four points. Wasicak rounded out the podium finish for the Crusaders with a 2:26.55 time.

Both 400 yard freestyle relay teams were awarded first place. The women's squad of Lightner, Berry, Lauren Knop (Geneva, Ill./Geneva), and Bretl stopped the clock at 3:57.30 which equaled 11 points.

Domjan, Trent Chamness (Elkhart, Ind./Concord), William Mathe (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), and Zach Christenson (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) matched the women's outcome with a 3:19.62 time.

Valpo will conclude its regular season on Saturday, Feb. 8th at the ARC when the team celebrates Senior Day. The dual meet is slated to begin at 2:00 pm.
