Val Kalmikovs is beginning his second season as a Valparaiso University assistant swim coach.
A native of Riga, Latvia, Kalmikovs has been a member of the Latvian National Team since 1990.
He participated in both the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM. This past year, Kalmikovs swam in his eighth World Championships.
He swam collegiately at the University of Nebraska where he was a nine-time All-American. In addition, Kalmikovs was an NCAA finalist and a three-time Big XII conference champion.
Kalmikovs graduated from Nebraska in 2001, with a B.A. in international affairs. He is currently working on a M.A.L.S. in sports management at Valparaiso.
Prior to arriving at Valpo, Kalmikovs was a student-assistant coach at Nebraska for the 2000-2001 season.
