Valpo Defeats Dayton 4-3
Saturday, September 27, 2003
Valparaiso's women's tennis team defeated Dayton 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Brown Courts. The Crusaders match that was scheduled against Indianapolis was cancelled due to darkness.

Dayton opened by winning the doubles point as the Crusaders were only able to post a victory at first doubles. Mara Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South H.S.) teamed with freshman Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North H.S.) for an 8-6 win over Courtney McDowell and Michelle Carroll.

Sonkin then posted a victory at first singles over McDowell 6-4, 6-2, while Chada won at third singles 6-2, 6-3 over Kate Donovan. Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) was a 6-2, 6-4 victor over Carroll at the second spot, while Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sarah Miller at fourth singles.

Earlier in the day, Dayton defeated Indianapolis 5-2, but the match was delayed by rain, thus pushing Valpo's match with the Greyhounds into darkness.

Valparaiso is scheduled to return to action on October 10-11 when the Crusaders travel to Carbondale, Ill. for the Southern Illinois Invitational.
