Valparaiso won two doubles matches and a pair of singles contests on day one at the Saluki Invitational held in Carbondale, Ill. on Friday.
In a non team-scored event, Valparaiso won singles matches at the second and fifth spots against Eastern Illinois. Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) was a 6-2, 7-5 victor in the second slot, while Jill Dierberg (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) registered a 6-0, 6-3 win in the fifth hole.
The Crusaders also played doubles matches against the Panthers and won both contests. Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North H.S.) and Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) scored a 9-7 win at first doubles. Mara Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South H.S.) and Janssen also tallied an 8-5 win at the second spot for the Brown and Gold.
Valparaiso will continue play at the Saluki Invitational, hosted by Southern Illinois, on Saturday, the final day of the fall season for the Crusaders.
