Valpo's Conference Win Streak Reaches 25 as Crusaders Win Twice

Valparaiso extended its Mid-Continent Conference regular season winning streak to 25 straight matches on Saturday as the Crusaders won a pair of contests. Valpo defeated Oral Roberts 4-1 in the morning and Western Illinois 4-0 in the afternoon on day two of the Mid-Con cluster in Shreveport, La.

The Crusaders jumped in front early against Oral Roberts, winning the doubles point Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) and Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) topped Emily Arkell and Adriana Garcia 8-6 at the top spot while Jill Dierberg (Saint Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) and Charmaine Stanislaw (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) took care of business at third doubles with an 8-3 win over Sonia Bailey and Debbie Skinstead. Oral Roberts' Diana Maria Salas and Rafaela de Souza led Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./North H.S.) and Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) 6-5 at second doubles when the match was stopped.

Oral Roberts (5-10, 1-1 Mid-Con) tied the match at one as Salas downed Dierberg 6-1, 6-2 at second singles. Valpo finished strong however, as Evangelist recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory over de Souza at fourth singles and Stanislaw defeated Corrine Langston 6-2, 6-1 at the fifth spot. Sajevic clinched the match for the Crusaders with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Garcia at the sixth spot.

The Golden Eagles led at the other remaining matches as Arkell held a 5-7, 6-4, 2-0 lead over Janssen and Bailey led Chada 3-6, 6-2, 2-0 when the match was decided.

Valpo again won the doubles point in the afternoon against Western Illinois (2-9, 1-2). Chada and Evangelist notched an 8-1 win over Jessica Drake and Tracey Forkin at second doubles while Dierberg and Stanislaw topped Jennifer Lutzke and Danielle Moy by the same score at third doubles. The Westerwinds' Constanza Camacho and Andrea Courtney led Janssen and Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) 5-4 when their first doubles match was halted.

The Crusaders then cruised in singles led by the bottom of the order. Evangelist defeated Drake 6-0, 6-1 at number four while Schwartz topped Moy 6-2, 6-1 at the sixth spot. Stanislaw then defeated Forkin 6-3, 6-1 to give Valpo its fourth straight victory overall. Janssen led Courtney 6-2, 3-2 and Chada led Lutzke 6-3, 5-0 when their matches were stopped while Camacho led Dierberg 6-2, 1-5.

Valparaiso (8-6, 3-0) will close out the weekend's action on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. as the Crusader face Oakland. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
