Crusaders Drop First Match of the Year Friday against Xavier

Valparaiso's women's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season on Friday evening, falling 7-0 at the hands of Xavier (Ohio) at Matchpoint Tennis Club.

The Musketeers opened with three straight victories in doubles play. Kristen Clary and Kara Courtney downed Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) and Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) 8-1 while Alicia Papa and Jackie Vilines beat Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) and Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./North H.S.) by the same score at the second spot. Sarah Potts and Kate Lohner were 8-3 winners for Xavier (1-0) over Jill Dierberg (Saint Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) and Charmaine Stanislaw (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) at third doubles.

In singles play, Valpo's Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) forced a third set tie-break before falling 7-6 (5) 2-6, 10-5 to Annie Diedalis in the only set that needed a tie-break. Clary downed Janssen 6-4, 6-2 at the top of the lineup while Vilines beat Chada 6-1, 6-1 at number two. Courtney was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Evangelist at three while Papa defeated Stanislaw 6-4, 6-2 at the fourth spot. In sixth singles, Potts upended Schwartz 6-1, 6-0

Valpo (1-1) will return to the courts on February 17 at Matchpoint to face Bradley. The contest begins at 5 p.m.
