Box Score

Valparaiso’s women’s tennis team closed the 2008 season on Saturday morning dropping a 4-0 decision to Youngstown State in the consolation draw of the Horizon League Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.

“We played a lot harder today than we did on Monday (a 7-0 loss at Youngstown State in regular season play),” head coach Jay Adams said.  “We were much closer in most of the matches, and led for awhile in doubles.  I am very proud of the team.”

Youngstown State (8-16), the tournament’s fifth seed, opened sweeping all three doubles matches.  Anna Volkova and Tanisha Welch defeated Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) and Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.) 8-6.  Hannah Patten and Michelle Fuleky defeated Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) and Jackie O’Reilly (DePere, Wis./DePere H.S.) by the same score at third doubles.  At the second spot, Emily Thayer and Kelly Culbertson topped Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) and Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) 8-4.

In singles action, victories at two, four, and five gave the Penguins the victory.  Welch downed Keifer 6-2, 6-2 at two while Fuleky defeated Antrobus 6-2, 6-3 at fourth singles.  Irena Lanc was a 6-1, 6-1 winner against Lawson at the fifth spot.  Youngstown State also led the three matches that were stopped.  Volkova led Sajevic 5-3 in the first set at number one singles while Thayer had a 6-4, 4-1 lead over Wingstrom at number three.  Culbertson took the first set from O’Reilly 6-4 at sixth singles only to trail 1-0 in the second set when the match was halted.

Valparaiso wraps up the season 2-17 overall.  The Crusaders did not any seniors on this year’s roster.
