Western Michigan Shuts Out Valpo Friday

Valparaiso wrapped up its final match before its annual spring trip on Friday evening, dropping a 7-0 decision to Western Michigan at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The Broncos opened strong, allowing just one game during doubles play.  Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) and Angelina Goheen (Aurora, Ill./Rosary H.S.) fell 8-1 to Caroline Aleck and April Kerr at the second spot.  Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central H.S.) and Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) lost 8-0 to Kathleen Hawkins and Maggie Remynse at the top of the lineup while Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Josesph’s H.S.) and Aubree Zdanovec (Appleton, Wis./East H.S.) fell by the same score at third doubles to Maria Nivia and Nini Sujashvilli.

Western Michigan (9-5) surrendered just two games in singles as well with Aleck defeating Lauren Kammerer (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) 6-1, 6-1.  The Broncos won the other five matches 6-0, 6-0.  Sujashvilli downed Barthels at the top while Remynse defeated York at second singles.  Nivia was a winner over Fredlake while Hawkins downed Zakiewicz at third and fourth singles respectively.  Kerr defeated Brittany O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest H.S.) at the sixth spot.

Valparaiso (3-4) will return to the courts on March 14 to face Biola in La Mirada, Calif.  First serve is slated for 2 p.m. CST.
