Valpo Women's Tennis Opens Season at Ball State

The Valparaiso women's tennis team got its 2012 fall season under way Friday and Saturday at the Ball State Fall Invitational in Muncie, Ind.

Nine different Crusaders saw actions over four flights of singles competition and two flights of double action. Sophomore Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) earned a win on Saturday in Flight 1 of singles over Cleveland State's Alex Power, while sophomore Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain) also competed in Flight 1 of singles and the duo paired in the top doubles flight. Sophomore Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph's) and junior Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) also teamed up for Flight 1 of doubles and both competed in Flight 3 of singles.

Senior Brittany O'Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) picked up a win on Saturday in singles competition at Flight 4, downing Dayton's Erin Filbrandt 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Angelina Goheen (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) forced a third set Friday against Wright State's Chelsea Girgash, but fell in a super tie break, 1-6, 6-2, 10-5. Sophomore Lauren Kammerer (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso), freshman Ashley Pabey (East Chicago, Ind./Central) and junior Aubree Zdanovec (Appleton, Wis./East) all competed in singles Flight 5, while Goheen and Zdanovec paired along with Kammerer and O'Reilly at Flight 2 of doubles action.

Valparaiso continues the fall campaign in two weekends at the three-day DePaul Invitational in Chicago, Ill., which gets underway on Friday, September 28.
