Crusaders Hit Turbulence in Season Opener

The Dayton Flyers spoiled the season opener for the women's tennis team Sunday night.  The Crusaders fell 7-0 in a neutral-site contest played in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Dayton opened the match sweeping the three doubles points.  Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) and Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph's H.S.) dropped the first match 8-3 versus Carly Peck and Maureen Stevens.  Katie Boeckman and Sammi Hornbarger delivered another 8-3 win over Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) and Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central H.S.).  The hometown product Lauren Kammerer and Angela Goheen (Aurora, Ill./Rosary H.S.) lost their doubles match 8-1 to Erin Filbrandt and Georgia Lammers.

Singles play was not any kinder to the Crusaders.  Hornbarger prevailed 6-0, 6-4 over Zakiewicz in the number one spot.  Hamel dropped her singles match 6-3, 6-0 to Peck.  Maureen Stevens won steadily over Fredlake 6-0, 6-1.  Fourth singles saw Barthels fall 6-3. 6-0.  Goheen and Filbrandt battled in fifth singles with Filbrandt taking the match 6-1, 6-0.  Kammerer won the most games in singles in the sixth spot.  She was on the losing end of a 6-4, 6-1 tilt.

Valpo has a quick turnaround as they take on the Western Michigan Broncos in Kalamazoo Monday afternoon.  First serve is set for 1:00 pm CDT.
