Valpo Clinches at Least a Share of Mid-Con Title

Valparaiso ran its winning streak to nine straight matches on Saturday and clinched at least a share of the Mid-Continent Conference title after shutting out Oral Roberts 7-0 and defeating Western Illinois 6-1 at Chesterton High School.

With the wins, the Crusaders improve to 12-4 overall and a perfect 7-0 in Mid-Con play.

In the morning match against Oral Roberts (4-11, 1-1 Mid-Con), Valpo won the doubles point by taking the first two matches. Jill Dierberg (Saint Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) and Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) were 8-2 victors at the second spot while Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./North H.S.) and Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) notched an 8-1 win at third doubles. Monika Danko (Northfield, Ill./New Trier H.S.) and Christina Scala (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South H.S.) led the Golden Eagles 6-5 at the top spot when the contest was stopped.

In singles action, Janssen posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at the top spot while in the second slot Danko won 6-0, 6-1. Scala and Evangelist both won easily as well, with Scala posting a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the fourth position and Evangelist winning 6-1, 6-0 at sixth singles. Chada rebounded after dropping the first set to win a third set tie-break 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 at the fifth spot and Dierberg won 7-5, 6-7, 8-6 after her opponent retired.

The afternoon saw Valpo win easily in doubles against the Westerwinds. Janssen and Dierberg were 8-3 winners at first doubles and Evangelist and Chada notched an 8-1 win at the second slot. The Crusaders won third doubles by default to take the first point of the match.

Janssen led her first singles match 6-1 when her opponent had to retire and Evangelist made it 3-0 Valpo with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the third spot. Chada clinched the match for the Brown and Gold with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at fourth singles and Charmaine Stanislaw (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at sixth singles. Dierberg rallied from a set down at the second spot to notch a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 triumph as Valpo led 6-0. Western Illinois (2-8, 0-3 Mid-Con) avoided the shutout with a win at third singles though 6-2, 6-7, 11-9.

Valparaiso will look to complete a perfect Mid-Continent Conference mark and clinch the regular season title outright on Sunday morning as the Crusaders face Centenary (3-10, 1-1 Mid-Con) in a 9 a.m. match at Chesterton High School.
