Valparaiso opened its 2005 fall tennis season with three flight victories over the weekend at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, Ind.
Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.), Charmaine Stanislaw (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville H.S.), and Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./Aurora H.S.) were triumphant at third, fourth, and fifth singles respectively.
Evangelist cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Earlham in the quarterfinals then defeated Baldwin-Wallace 6-1, 6-0 in the semis. In the championship, she triumphed 6-0, 6-2.
Stanislaw posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over a player from DePauw in the first round and a 6-1, 6-3 win over Baldwin-Wallace in the semifinals. She won 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the championship against Indianapolis.
At fifth singles, Schwartz notched a 6-3, 6-2 win in the quarterfinals against DePauw and beat a player from Indianapolis 6-1, 6-0 in the semis. In the title match against DePauw, the freshman won 6-0, 6-2.
Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./North H.S.) was the runner-up in the second singles flight. She was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over BW in the first round and a 6-0, 6-0 victor over Indianapolis in the semifinals. In the championship, Chada fell 6-1, 6-1 to a player from DePauw.
At number one singles, Jill Dierberg (Saint Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) earned a fourth place finish. She won her first match against Indianapolis 7-5, 6-2 before falling to a pair of players from DePauw.
In doubles play, both Valpo teams earned third place finishes. At the top spot, Evangelist and Chada won 7-6 (6), 7-5 against Baldwin-Wallace in the first round before losing to Indianapolis 6-4, 6-2 in the semis. In the consolation match, they were 6-0, 6-0 winners over Indianapolis.
At second doubles, Dierberg and Stanislaw earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Indiana-Southeast in the first round before falling to Indianapolis in the semis. In the third place match, the duo notched a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Valpo will return to the courts September 23-25 in Chicago at the DePaul Invitational. First serve each day is slated for 9 a.m.
