Valpo Opens Mid-Con Slate with Sweep of Centenary

Valparaiso opened 2006 Mid-Continent Conference play on Friday afternoon with a 7-0 victory over Centenary in Shreveport, La.

The win was the Crusaders 23rd straight victory in Mid-Con regular season play dating back to the 2003 season. Valpo won all nine matches on the afternoon against Centenary (3-10, 1-1 Mid-Con), including all six singles contests in straight sets.

The Brown and Gold got off to a quick start in doubles action. The duo of Jill Dierberg (Saint Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) and Charmaine Stanislaw (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) got things started with a quick 8-1 victory over Jenn Majchrowicz and Lindsay Ezell at third singles. Valpo then clinched the point as the second doubles tandem of Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./North H.S.) and Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) cruised to an 8-3 victory over Kristina Collins and Courtney Myers. Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) and Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) capped off the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Heather Kelly and Christine Majchrowicz at the top of the lineup.

As the teams moved to singles play, Valpo continued its dominance. Stanislaw posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jenn Majchrowicz at fifth singles to get things started. Chada added a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Collins at the third spot before Evangelist clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Myers at fourth singles. Janssen then won 6-0, 6-1 against Kelly at the top spot and Dierberg added a 6-1, 6-1 win against Christine Majchrowicz at second singles. Schwartz concluded the day's sweep with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Ezell at the bottom of the lineup.

Valparaiso (6-6, 1-0) will look to continue its winning streak on Saturday in Shreveport as the Brown and Gold play a pair of conference matches. The Crusaders will face Oral Roberts beginning at 9 a.m. before facing Western Illinois at 2 p.m.
