Valparaiso wrapped up the 2008 regular season on Monday afternoon dropping a 7-0 decision to the Penguins of Youngstown State in Youngstown, Ohio.
Youngstown State (7-15, 4-4 Horizon League) opened play winning all three doubles contests. Tanisha Welch and Anna Volkova topped Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) and Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.) 8-2 at the top of the order while Kelly Culbertson and Emily Thayer were 8-1 victors over Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) and Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) at number two doubles. Valpo’s Jackie O’Reilly (DePere, Wis./DePere H.S.) and Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) played a tight match with Irena Lanc and Hannah Patten before falling 8-6 at third doubles.
In singles play, Sajevic forced a second set tie-breaker before falling 6-2, 7-6 (4) at the top of the lineup against Volkova. Welch downed Keifer 6-2, 6-0 while Thayer was a 6-0, 6-1 victor against Wingstrom at second and third singles respectively. Michelle Fuleky defeated Antrobus 6-1, 6-1 at number four singles while Lanc beat Lawson 6-2, 6-1 at the fifth spot. Culbertson rounded out the match with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against O’Reilly at the bottom of the order.
Valparaiso (2-15, 0-8) will head to Indianapolis, Ind. for the 2008 Horizon League Championships this Friday through Sunday. Official league pairings will be released either late Monday or first thing Tuesday morning.
