Butler Spoils Valpo's Horizon League Debut

            Valparaiso made its debut in the Horizon League on Friday afternoon, but dropped a 7-0 decision to Butler at Matchpoint Tennis Club in Griffith, Ind.  The contest was originally slated to be played outdoors, but the cold and damp weather forced the match indoors.

            Butler (9-7, 5-0 Horizon League) struck first in doubles, sweeping all three matches.  Becky Jenkins and Molly Casperson defeated Lindsey Gustafson (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) and Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) 8-0 at second doubles.  Michelle Hawes and Tiffany McLoughlin added an 8-1 victory over Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) and Jackie O’Reilly (DePere, Wis./DePere H.S.).  Valpo’s team of Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) and Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.), playing at first doubles for the first time this season, dropped an 8-3 decision to Natali Jaimes and Gabriella Bobrowski.

            The Bulldogs continued their winning ways in singles.  Hawes defeated Lawson 6-0, 6-1 at the sixth spot in the lineup.  McLoughlin topped Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) 6-1, 6-0 at number five singles before Jaimes downed Keifer 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the match with the fourth point of the day.

            Babrowski added a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gustafson at third singles for Butler and Casperson downed Sajevic at the top of the order 6-0, 6-4.  Jenkins completed the shutout for the Bulldogs with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Wingstrom at number four singles.

            Valparaiso (2-6, 0-1) will continue Horizon League action on Saturday evening as the Crusaders head to Milwaukee, Wis. to face the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  First serve against the Panthers is set for 5 p.m.
