Valparaiso’s women’s tennis team continued its four-match homestand on Saturday afternoon, falling to Cleveland State 7-0 at Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet Club in Flossmoor, Ill. after being forced to play indoors due to rain in Northwest Indiana.
The Vikings won all three doubles matches to take the opening point. Catrine Bjerrehus and Charlotte Gibbons defeated Camill Burden (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) and Brittany O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest H.S.) 8-1 at number one while Mengdi Liu and Sandra Bjelan downed Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) and Jackie O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./DePere H.S.) by the same score at number three. Nicole Janek and Maria Lazaris were 8-2 winners against Abby Wright (Sarasota, Fla./Pendleton H.S.) and Katie Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo H.S.) at second doubles.
Cleveland State (12-10, 4-0 Horizon) won all six singles contest in straight sets. Bjerrehus downed Wright 6-0, 6-0 at number one while Janek beat York by the same score at four. Lazaris topped Brittany O’Reilly 6-1, 6-0 at the second spot while Gibbons was a 6-0, 6-2 victor against York at three. Bjelan defeated Jackie O’Reilly 6-1, 6-2 at fifth singles while Liu was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) to round out the lineup.
Valparaiso (0-10, 0-5) will host Wayne State at the Valpo Tennis Complex on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. to continue the homestand.
