Valparaiso wrapped up the home portion of the 2010-2011 women’s tennis season on Tuesday afternoon with four three-set matches in singles action, but ultimately fell to Indiana Wesleyan 6-1 at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
Jackie O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./DePere H.S.), the only senior on the roster, teamed with Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) for a thrilling 9-8 (6) victory at number one doubles over Eva Delk and Lisa Massey after trailing 6-1 in the match.
Indiana Wesleyan (21-1) earned wins at the other two spots though to claim the first point of the day. Rachael Heiniger and Lauren Wilson posted an 8-2 win over Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, ind./Northridge H.S.) and Katie Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo H.S.) at number two while Aubrey Lohser and Caitlin McGuire were 8-1 winners over Brittany O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest H.S.) and Aubree Zdanovec (Appleton, Wis./East H.S.) at the third spot.
Zakiewicz earned Valpo’s lone point on the afternoon with a come-from-behind win at fifth singles. She dropped the first set before winning in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 against Kristen Futrell. Jackie O’Reilly won the first set against Massey at the top of the lineup before falling 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-2 while Brittany O’Reilly also lost in three sets against Delk 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 at the second spot. York forced a third set at six singles against McGuire before dropping a 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-0 decision.
Heiniger was a straight sets winner over Zdanovec 6-1, 6-0 at number four singles while Wilson topped Bilyeu 6-3, 6-0 at the third spot in the order.
Valparaiso (0-17) will take to the road for its final two matches of the season this weekend, beginning on Saturday in Indianapolis. The Crusaders will face Butler at 1 p.m. CDT.
