In their first of three consecutive road matches, the Crusader women fell to Horizon League foe Detroit by a score of 6-1.
Detroit swept the doubles competition, defeating the No.1 doubles pairing of Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) and Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain) 8-3, and the No.2 doubles pairing of Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph’s) and Angelina Goheen (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) 8-0. The No.3 doubles contest was retired after the doubles point was decided.
Detroit went onto increase its advantage in the match to 6-0 and looked to sweep the singles competition, before falling at No.6 singles. Detroit did not have a competitor at No.6 singles, giving Morgan Paras (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) the victory by default. Valparaiso’s play was highlighted by Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster), the team leader in singles victories. Heuer was able to take two matches in both the first and second sets in No.3 singles, before falling 6-2, 6-2.
Valparaiso (1-4 Horizon) continues its road trip Sunday afternoon with a Horizon League match at Oakland (1-5 Horizon). The match is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
