Senior Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph's) recorded a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 marathon winner at No. 6 singles versus Victoria Ferry on Sunday morning at the Youngstown State Outdoor Courts. Valpo fell, though, 6-1 in the season finale as the Penguins completed a perfect 8-0 run in Horizon League play.
Youngstown State tallied a pair of 6-0 wins in doubles play to capture the first point. Dominicka Lackova/Sofia Macias Mendoza defeated Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) and Fredlake at No. 3. Annina Brendel and Nehel Sahni bested Cary Milanes (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) and Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) at No. 2 to bring doubles play to a close.
YSU's Marta Burak opened singles action with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 over Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain). Lackova got past Kathleen Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. Sahni clinched the match for the Penguins at No. 4 following a 6-2, 6-3 win against Heuer.
Brendel outlasted Milanes 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3. Mendoza won Youngstown State's last singles match of the day by virtue of her 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Barthels.
Fredlake came through for the Crusaders with a big 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 victory against Ferry.
Barthels and Milanes led the Brown and Gold this spring with eight wins. Heuer and Milanes both paced Valpo with eight doubles wins as well.
