The 2015 Bronco Invitational wrapped up Sunday, but not before sophomore Kathleen Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) earned a consolation title in the Heidi Vizgaitis Flight of the eight-team tournament. The Valpo women's tennis team recorded a total of seven wins over the weekend.
Hebble dropped her first-round match 6-3, 7-5 to Western Michigan's Denise Azcui, but responded with a pair of straight-set triumphs to improve her overall singles record to 5-4. She downed Horizon League foe Dasha Artamonova of Oakland, 7-6 (3), 6-0, before picking up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Chicago State's Carynne Lloyd in the consolation final.
Junior Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) also registered a win in her matchup with a Golden Grizzly. Heuer beat Elizabeth Guy, 6-1, 6-4, in the opening round of the Sue Weigand Flight. A 6-3,6-4 loss to Bobbi Modesto - the sister of freshman Meg - in the semifinals sent Heuer to the third place match. There, she scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Elaine Cloem of Wright State.
Sophomore Erin Staal (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) got into the win column by virtue of her 6-3, 6-4 result versus Lewis's Megan Conlin.
The Crusaders went 2-5 in the doubles portion of the tournament.
Meg Modesto (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) and Cary Milanes (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) doubled up the Chicago State tandem of Hanna Pangestu/Leshia Gadacz, 6-3.
Heuer and Hebble teamed up to shutout Carynne Lloyd/Marnie Perez-Ochoa, 6-0.
Valpo will conclude its fall season Tuesday in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Crusaders are slated to face Davenport at 5:00 pm CT.
