The Valpo women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Chicago State Tuesday afternoon in the Windy City. Kat Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) and Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) were victorious atop doubles play, but the Cougars rallied at No. 2 and 3 to take the doubles point and all six singles flights.
Hebble and Heuer's gutsy 6-4 triumph came after Chicago State clinched the opening point. Bryttish Burts and Hanna Pangestu defeated Halle Roach (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and Erin Staal (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven), 6-1, at No. 3 before Marnie Perez-Ochoa and Monica Pulgar doubled up Meg Modesto (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) and Randi Wind (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) at No. 2.
Pulgar opened singles action with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 over Roach. Leshia Gadacz upended Modesto, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 to give Chicago State a 3-0 lead.
The match was secured at No. 1 singles once Pangestu outlasted Hebble, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 1. Lorea Gamboa followed with a 3-6, 6-3, 12-10 win versus Heuer at No. 2. Perez-Ochoa got past Wind at No. 4 by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Burts and Paras engaged in a marathon match at No. 6 before Burts emerged with a 6-2, 6-7 (7), 10-8 result.
The Crusaders (1-9) will stay in the Windy City as they'll face UIC (6-5) Wednesday morning at 10:30 am at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts.
