Claire Czerwonka Named MVC Singles Player of the Week

Following a 2-0 weekend to open Missouri Valley Conference play including a victory on her Senior Day, Valparaiso University tennis fifth-year senior Claire Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) has been named the MVC Singles Player of the Week.

Czerwonka extended her singles winning streak to four thanks to her victories this weekend. She started the weekend by downing Drake’s Ines Stephani in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday. Her effort helped the Beacons come close to knocking off the defending MVC champions in a narrow 4-3 setback.

Czerwonka continued a perfect weekend, where she won all four sets, by making quick work of UNI’s Lorena Cardoso 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday. Her performance on Sunday helped Valpo beat UNI 7-0, the program’s first 7-0 win in a conference match since 2007. Czerwonka is up to 56 career singles victories, fifth in program history.

This marks the 12th time in Czerwonka’s commendable career that she has earned an MVC weekly award. Valpo will continue the MVC slate on Saturday at Missouri State. As a team, the Beacons have hauled in five MVC honors this season.
