Holly Hagen (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) posted a new school record for Valparaiso University on Friday afternoon as the Crusaders concluded day two of the Mid-Continent Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Cedar City, Utah.

The Crusaders finished day two in third place with 43 points, 5.5 more than fourth place Oral Roberts. Southern Utah continues to lead with 108 points followed by Western Illinois with 85.5. Chicago State is fifth with 20 points and UMKC has scored 18.

Hagen set a new school mark in the shot put with a toss of 42'10 ¼", earning a fourth place for the Brown and Gold. She bettered her own school mark set earlier this season by ¾". Emilie Marsicek (Spalding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau H.S.) also finished sixth in the event with her toss of 41'1 ¾".

Marsicek was also one of two Crusaders to score in the heptathlon that concluded on Friday. She earned a seventh place finish with 3.402 points. Heather Furr (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield H.S.) finished fourth for the Crusaders with 3,969 points, second most in school history.

Martha Josephson (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes H.S.) earned a sixth place finish in the high jump clearing 5'2 ¼" to gain three points for the Brown and Gold.

Valpo failed to score in the long jump, where Amanda Meyer (Somerset, Wis./Somerset H.S.) turned in the Crusaders best effort with a toss of 16'10 ¾", finishing in 11th place.

In the only running event final of the day, Valpo took fifth through eighth place in the 3,000m steeplechase to gain ten team points. Jobeth Schmiesing (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West H.S.) led the way for the Crusaders with a time of 12:36.74. Rachel Stoehr (Antigo, Wis./Antigo H.S.) finished sixth in 13:01.26, while Ashley Billstrom (Hales Corners, Wis./Whtinall H.S.) followed in 13:14.00. Amanda Lee (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon H.S.) rounded out the point scorers for Valpo with a time of 13:25.50.

Preliminary heats were also held in the sprints on day two. Laura Arloszynski (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield H.S.) earned a spot in the finals of the 100m dash with her time of 12.64 seconds. The freshman tied for seventh in qualifying. In the 400m dash, Maggie Zellner (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) also qualified seventh with a time of 58.64 seconds.

In the 400m hurdles, Mary Frisch (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) and Furr finished seventh and eighth to advance to the finals. Frisch turned in a time of 1:11.61 while Furr was just .04 seconds behind.

The Crusaders failed to qualify anyone for the finals in the 100m hurdles, as Frisch finished in 12th place with a time of 18.64 seconds. Valpo also did not advance in the 200m dash where Arloszynski was the top finisher in 16th place with a time of 26.66 seconds.

The championships will wrap-up on Saturday with events beginning at 10 a.m. CDT.
