Valparaiso University freshman Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain H.S.) was named the Mid-Continent Conference Newcomer of the Year in outdoor track and field and was one of five Crusaders to earn All Mid-Continent Conference honors following the weekend's championships.

Joining Wilson on the All-Conference team were Jessica Cherrington (Roseberg, Ore./Umpqua Valley Christian H.S.), Holly Hagen (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.), Emilie Marsicek (Spalding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau H.S.), and Jobeth Schmiesing (Mankato, Minn./West H.S.).

Wilson finished third in the long jump with a mark of 18'1". She also set a new school record in the preliminary heat of the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.75 seconds before finishing fifth in the finals. The freshman also placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 36'1 ½" and was a member of both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays that finished fifth.

Cherrington was the runner-up in the javelin with a toss of 130'0". The senior also finished eighth in the shot put with a mark of 34'2 ¾" and ninth in the discus with a throw of 107'9". Cherrington is a three-time All-Conference selection.

Hagen finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 177'0", setting a new school record. Her effort was just missed an NCAA regional qualifying mark by just eight inches. The senior also finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 127'0" and third in the shot put with a heave of 40'0 ¾".

Marsicek was the Mid-Con runner-up in the discus with a mark of 129'9". In addition, she finished fourth in the shot put (39'1 ¼") and sixth in the hammer throw (137'9"). The sophomore finished seventh in the javelin with a toss of 110'1".

Schmiesing earned a third place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase turning in a time of 11:30.13. The junior also finished seventh in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:58.22 and eighth in the 5,000m run, crossing the line in 18:39.08.
