Sophomore Ini Umana (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) broke a nine-year-old school record in the discus throw Saturday at the Puma Invitational in Rensselaer, Ind., one of nine event victories on the day for the Valparaiso women’s track and field team.

Umana registered a mark of 141’6” for the victory in the discus throw.  The distance surpassed Valpo’s previous record in the event, set by Elizabeth Schroeder in 1999, by six inches.

“I was really proud today to see Ini have a breakout meet,” said Crusader head coach Ryan Moore.  “I’ve been waiting for that record to fall since I got here as an assistant four years ago, and she really stepped up today to make it happen.”

Emilie Marsicek (Spalding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau) enjoyed a stellar day in the throws as well.  Marsicek took event victories in both the shot put and javelin throw with marks of 44’1 ½” and 109’10”, respectively, both Crusader season-best marks.  She added a runner-up showing in the discus throw with a toss of 136’10”, the third-best distance in the event in Valpo history.

“It’s good to see Emilie start to come around again,” said Moore.  “She really had a good showing today in both the shot and the discus.”

Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) tallied three first-place finishes on the day, including a meet-record performance in the triple jump, leaping 36’7 ¾”.  The senior added victories in the long jump (17’11 ½”) and the 100m hurdles (15.33 seconds) as well.

Also on the track, Patricia Kloth (Medford, Wis./Medford Area) ran the fourth-fastest time in Crusader history in the 400m dash, crossing the line in 1:00.58 to earn the win.  Amanda Body (Harlan, Ky./Harlan) posted a season-best time of 12.49 seconds in her victorious effort in the 100m dash, while Amy Anderson (Morton, Ill./Morton) added a first-place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:11.90.

Valparaiso returns to the track next week at the Hillsdale Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich.  The four-day meet starts on Wednesday, April 23 at 2 p.m. CDT.
