Wilson's Two Victories Lead Valpo at Phoenix Invitational

Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) won two events Saturday and finished second in another to help guide Valparaiso to a fifth-place team finish at the Phoenix Invitational in Chicago, Ill.

The Crusaders totaled 84 points on the meet for their fifth place finish.  The University of Chicago, the host institution, took top team honors with 167 points.

Wilson moved into second on Valpo’s all-time chart in the long jump in her first event victory of the day, leaping 18’7 ¼” to outpace teammate Amanda Body (Harlan, Ky./Harlan), who jumped 16’10 ¾”, for the victory.  Wilson proceeded to also take top honors in the triple jump with a mark of 37’0 ½”, and placed second in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.56, followed closely in that event by Lakisha Lane (Topeka, Kan./Highland Park), who crossed the line in 8.80 seconds for a third-place finish.

Lane added another top-five finish in the 400m dash, placing fourth with a time of 1:04.89.  Also earning two top-fives on the track was senior Patricia Kloth (Medford, Wis./Medford Area), who moved into fourth on Valpo’s all-time list in the 55m dash with a time of 7.50 seconds, good for third place.  Kloth also came home in fifth position in the 200m dash, completing the race in 26.92 seconds.

Emilie Marsicek (Spalding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau) again paced Valpo’s effort in the throws.  The senior tallied a third-place finish in the weight throw, registering a mark of 45’9 ¾”.

Valparaiso returns to the track next weekend at the Findlay Classic in Findlay, Ohio.  Events start Friday, January 25 at 10 a.m. CST and continue Saturday at 7 a.m.
