Pair of Records Fall As Valpo Outdoor Season Rolls On
Sarah Peters broke Valpo's school record outdoors in the pole vault Saturday.

Valparaiso University track and field seniors Sarah Peters and Jacob Smutz set new outdoor program records on Saturday as the Crusaders continued their outdoor campaign at the Edmonds Invitational, hosted by Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind.

Peters, who already held the Crusader women’s indoor record in the pole vault, claimed the outdoor record for her own as well Saturday, clearing 11’10 ¼” on her first effort – good for a second-place finish. Meanwhile, Smutz surpassed the record in the hammer throw previously held by newly inducted Valparaiso University Hall of Famer Steve Bartholomew, as the senior posted a winning toss of 202’7”, nine inches past Bartholomew’s school standard.

The women claimed two event victories in Rensselaer on Saturday, as sophomore Asia Banks won the 400m dash with a time of 1:01.94, while senior Heather Mende claimed top honors in the javelin throw with a mark of 115’2”. Freshman Abby Jankowski posted an effort of 133’6” in the discus throw, good for third place, while senior Ann Chapman moved into fifth in program history in the triple jump with a leap of 34’10 ¼”, good for a fourth-place finish.

Smutz spearheaded a 1-2 Valpo finish on the men’s side in the hammer throw on Saturday, as fellow senior Chris Sosnowski recorded a toss of 177’11”, improving upon his fourth-best mark in program history. Sophomore Alexander Watson tied for top honors in the pole vault as well, clearing 14’3 ¼”.

Freshman Andrew McKissick notched a second-place finish of his own on the infield, claiming runner-up honors in the javelin throw with a mark of 173’3”. On the track, Jeru Lollis finished second with a time of 22.93 seconds in the 200m dash and junior Dan Walters took second place with a time of 16:00.12 in the 5,000m run, while the Crusaders’ 4x100m and 4x400m relay squads both earned second-place finishes as well.

Valparaiso returns to action next weekend at Eastern Illinois’ Big Blue Classic in Charleston, Ill.
